General George Augustus Eliott was appointed Governor of Gibraltar in 1775, shortly before the American War of Independence. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-83) he successfully defended the fortress from French and Spanish attack in what became the longest siege endured by British forces. He is depicted at Gibraltar during the siege, symbolically holding the key to the fortress, wearing the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. He was made Baron Heathfield in 1787.
